Done'Share the message of eternal lifeGod created us with a free will and we often choose to disobey Him. This part of our nature is called sin and it separates us from God. The Bible says: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" -Romans 3:23God is perfect and cannot allow sin in His presence. Unless we are cleansed of our sin, the price we will pay when we die will be eternal separation from God. "For the wages of sin is death..." -Romans 6:23aGod sent His son Jesus Christ to pay the price for us. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." -Romans 5:8 We are not saved by our own efforts... "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast." -Ephesians 2:8-9It is not enough just to believe. The Bible says: "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." -Romans 10:9God loves you and wants to have a relationship with you here on earth and wants you to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Eternal life is a free gift from God, but, we must choose to accept it.Lord Jesus, I need you. Please forgive me for the sins I have committed. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. To be a sinner means that we are not good enough in the eyes of God to go to heaven. For example, suppose you and I were to try to swim across the Atlantic Ocean. Now you might be a better swimmer than I, and swim farther. A member of the Olympic team would probably swim farther than either of us. But none of us could possibly swim across the Atlantic. In the same way, some people live better lives than others, but no one is good enough in God's eyes to go to heaven. We all do things we shouldn't do or don't do things we should do. Our sin separates us from God because He is perfect and holy. The word holy means to be "set apart".Suppose I had robbed a store. Eyewitnesses identify me and I'm brought before the judge and I'm sentenced. But I say to the judge "I'm sorry, I'll give the goods back and I promise to never steal again." If the judge were to pardon me, he would be an unjust judge. We would never hope for such a pardon from human judges. Yet God is far more just than our human judges. He doesn't weigh the good against the bad to determine whether we can have eternal life. And being just, he must punish our sin by death. The story is told of a Tibetan ruler who once declared that anyone caught stealing would lose his hand to the axe. Throughout the kingdom, as violators were discovered, each was brought to the king and their hand was cut off. One day guards brought an old woman before him, and when he asked her whether or not she had stolen the item, she responded that she had. He turned to her and said "You have been found guilty as charged, and the penalty is the loss of a hand. I cannot change the verdict even though you are my mother, but my love for you is great, and I am willing to pay the price for you." And with that, he laid his hand on the chopping block and had it severed from his arm. His only choice was to substitute himself for the one he loved. The woman was guilty and the penalty had to be paid. Had he excused her without payment he would have no longer been a just king. In the same way, God has found us guilty as charged, with the penalty being death, eternal separation from God. But because of His great love for us, he came to earth as a man, Jesus Christ, the only perfect man ever to walk the face of the earth, and He substituted Himself for us by dying in our place on the cross so we could live. And on the third day He arose, proof that sin, death and the devil (our enemy and tempter) had been conquered.Going back to the illustration of trying to swim across the Atlantic, suppose a boat came by and the Captain offered you a ride to the other shore. You could choose to trust in your own ability (which would be foolish), or you could accept his offer and come aboard, trusting in the Captain, his abilities and the boat. In the same way, God is offering us the gift of eternal life, but He doesn't force it on us. We must receive it by trusting in Jesus and His death for us, recognizing that it's not on the basis of what we've done, not even our good life, baptism or church membership; but only on the basis of what Christ has done for us, that we can have eternal life. It is important to know that once you put your trust in Christ (once you climb aboard the boat), living the Christian life is done through Christ's strength, not your own. Jesus is the captain of the ship. Galations 2:20 says, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."A story is told of a man who set up a tight rope across Niagara falls. In front of a great crowd, he walked across the tight rope and back. He then rode a bike across the tight rope and back. He performed many feats on this tight rope and finally asked the crowd if they believed he could push a wheel barrow across the tight rope with a person in it. The crowd said "Yes, we believe!" He then asked the crowd, "Who wants to get in the wheel barrow?", and not a single person volunteered. It is one thing to say that you believe, it is another thing to live your life like you believe.1.0
